Seems very pointless for Anaheim and they're not trading the best pick in the deal either.

Why are the Ducks trading the most valuable player and the most valuable pick?

Smith and Reilly have no value to the Ducks, we're in last place we dont want older expiring players

We could have had Reilly for free if we wanted and we didnt, you'd have to pay us to take each of those players, and a 3rd rounder to ANA for Grant on top of the cost of the cap dumps

Not sure why the Ducks do this as they aren't getting much value.

Grant & Smith are expiring UFA's. Grant in general doesn't have much value as a 4th line grinder and Smith is having the worst year of his career, so lets call the value a wash

That leaves Reilly + 7th for a 3rd, which is really bad value for the Ducks. Not only is Reilly really not much of an upgrade on anything they already have, but he's signed for another year. Overall the deal doesn't help the Ducks at all and really only benefits Boston.

Intergalactically bad trade for Anaheim. Your own authoritative colleague @ON3M4N says it best -- rental Smith is of no help whatsoever to a rebuilding team, and a guy who just passed through waivers isn't someone Anaheim should be paying a third for.

It would appear you forgot to pay for the 4.5 million in cap you opened up next year and three million off next year's books as well.
