Trades
1.
ANA
  1. Blackwood, Mackenzie
Additional Details:
Stolarz is not as good of a goaltender compared to Blackwood.

The problem is Blackwood has a higher cap and almost zero trade value. He doesn’t have a future with the Devils and he’d get claimed on waivers. Anaheim gets a reclamation project for their rebuild.

The Devils receive Stolarz, a hometown boy who was born in Edison, NJ. He is a pure rental with a lower cap. Sure, he’s had a horrible season, but a homecoming might do him well.
2.
NJD
  1. Athanasiou, Andreas ($1,200,000 retained)
CHI
  1. Boqvist, Jesper
  2. 2024 4th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
I compare Athanasiou to the Vatrano to NYR Trade and Nick Paul/Mathieu Joseph + 4th

Vatrano (49-10-9-19) (-2) prior to trade

Athanasiou (38-8-4-12) (-15)(exp. 50-10.5-4.5-15)

It doesn’t help when he hasn’t gained as much traction on the TDL. Some Chicago mock TDLs don’t even have him included in a trade at all.

The Blackhawks could use a role player to fill (ex. Boqvist) the gaps since they are having a fire sale, a Bottom 5 farmsystem until the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and someone who’s flippable in the future (ex. acq. Lafferty and flipping him this deadline). It’d go for Player or Prospect/2024 4th or 2023 5th
3.
NJD
    - Conditional 2024 1st
    - A/B Tier Prospect
    - Take on a 3rd Pair RD cap hit, pending UFA who won’t resign to Jersey

Fwiw, Ben Chiarot got a lot more and Top 4 RD don’t come cheap
    WPG
    1. Severson, Damon ($2,083,333 retained)

I’m very high on Damon Severson, but that ask just isn’t realistic for a rental that doesn’t make hockey men drool the way a guy like Chiarot (and his frankly look overall play) does.

It doesn’t make sense to sell him anyway. Keep one of the best right d corps in hockey for the possible playoff run. It’s not a position of need anyway

Stokers is great, but I think Anaheim asks for more to take on the salary

AA doesn’t make sense on this team. Our top 6 options are all better than him, and he’s not a good enough defender to deserve a place in the bottom six. Bo can at least defend well

Extension is a must for any team acquiring Severson. No one is going to trade for a rental. It doesn’t have to be Athanasiou. It could be a another depth winger, but the Devils owe it to the team for outperforming expectations and to the fans as well. Stolarz for Blackwood is a fair deal. Might even be an overpay on Jersey’s end

This seems contradictory. If the Devils owe the fans and the team, why would they downgrade what has been one of the best defense groups in the league for futures when trading Severson? Use him as a self rental, and move on in the offseason if he’s going to leave

I don’t think eating Blackwoods contract for you guys and giving you a cheap solid backup makes sense for Anaheim

Why do the Ducks want a reclamation project we have to pay ~2 million more to who's having a worse season than the guy we are sending over? Stolarz is posting a higher save percentage behind what's considered to be an AHL defense, Blackwood is behind one of the premier defenses in the league.

We're taking on 2 million in salary for a worse, shorter goaltender, and our goalie of the future is waiting in the wings down in San Diego, and we know he is ready to go. The only "advantage" of Blackwood is he is a couple years younger and has RFA rights, but as you point out, with his contract, he has no trade value. We wouldn't be QOing him if we took him.

Send a pick/prospect over for the difference in value or we just hang onto Stolarz. Probably sign him to a one year deal to stay behind Gibson while we get our defense in order.
