Trades
VAN
  1. Coghlan, Dylan
  2. Drury, Jack
  3. Kotkaniemi, Jesperi
  4. 2023 1st round pick (CAR)
  5. 2023 5th round pick (VAN)
  6. 2024 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Asking price on Horvat is a 1st, a young center, and a right shot defensemen.

There is no way the Canes part with their No. 1 prospect, Scott Morrow. Coghlan sweetens the deal and is expendable. The Canes are solid on the right side. They just need a reliable 3LD
CAR
  1. Dermott, Travis
  2. Horvat, Bo ($1,375,000 retained)
Additional Details:
It comes with an extension for Horvat. May need to get a third party involved to take 25% of Horvat’s cap

No thanks. Don’t want anything to do with Kotkaniemi’s contract

Kotkaniemi is a big cap dump at this point. I don't think the Canucks trade for him unless there OEL is going the other way.

The Canes will probably have to add a higher draft pick to dump Kotkaniemi. This just seems like a trade where it can be done as long as the Canucks are tearing it down and rebuilding. I’m sure it’ll look different without KK and the picks can be balanced. My objective was to address the needs of each team.

VAN: Needs a 1st, Young Center, and RHD
CAR: could use a 2C, as long as a KK gets dumped whether in VAN or elsewhere and a 3LD. The Canucks have a logjam at LD

I really believe the Canucks and Hurricanes are natural trading partners, but Colorado, Vegas are also interested in Horvat. Should be interesting to see where he’ll land at the TDL

Despite what you are trying to sell, KK is not a cap dump. It’s not even a fair evaluation to call him that halfway into year 1 when he is only 22. Sure, is he playing up to his contract right now, not really. But his contract is very likely to look like a steal in a couple of years. I mean, hell, everyone said that the same things when Slavin and Pesce signed their contracts, and low and behold, they look like steals. KK is following the same path. We can revisit this topic in a few years and determine then if he is a cap dump or not, but you can’t call him a cap dump this early in his career.

As for the trade, Canes will definitely pass.

I think if you drop Kotkaniemi, there's no reason the Canes wouldn't do it. Kotkaniemi's a good value long term 3C and a replacement for Jordan Staal. He's also got 8 points in his last 12 so he's starting to produce. He's still 22 and he's improved basically every game he's played. I do not think I've seen Kotkaniemi have a game where he was anything less than a 7/10. He's been consistent with what he is. For how much he makes as a Staal replacement, absolutely no shot Canes move him.

Drury, Coghlan, 1st, 3rd, 5th for Horvat half retained after Carolina is allowed to negotiate with him I think is fair. I still don't think the Canes do it because he isn't a fit for Rod's system, but I also believe Rod's system holds the team back.
