In my humble opinion, I think that hockey general managers should follow the same first principle that guides doctors: First, do no harm. With that in mind, let me ask you this:
What assurance do you have that Thatcher Demko will be able to play any time this season?
He began a "6-week" rehab period on December 3, so he's now entering the 12th week of that recovery process. The Canucks haven't reactivated him off the IR list for tonight's game, and Vancouver has only 5 games left after tonight before the trade deadline in which he could possibly prove his fitness before you have to make the decision. Are you really willing to risk a substantial portion of those assets listed above (because he's the main asset you're acquiring in that trade) on the HOPE that (1) he's going to be fit anytime soon, and (2) that he will return to his 2021-2022 form in that time?
I've made this observation many times in the past two months -- so many times that several Vancouver fans think I have something against Demko (or maybe just the Canucks). I don't; it's just that for an extended period of time, those Vancouver fans kept posting Demko-to-Los-Angeles-for-Cal-Petersen-LA's 2023 first-round draft pick-and- Quinton-Byfield-or-Brandt-Clarke trades that I ended up sounding like a broken record.
