Interesting book- the sports gene, by David epstein. There's a chapter about a Canadian junior team, Tyler ennis was on it. Basically, he shows that there are more Jan, Feb, March birthdays in the NHL because most cutoffs are Jan 1st. So there's a lot of kids that benefit from being 10 months older (and more physically mature) than the november/December birthdays. So the older kids get funneled into travel teams, while the younger kids are stuck in house. Then those travel kids get more ice time and play with better coaches and players more frequently. So the jan/feb/March birthdays have opportunities to become better.
