Montreal will just keep him past the deadline and try to resign him for next year. He has already said he would be willing to resign, so if you don't up the offer to be at least a 2nd that upgrades to a 1st based on GP then the Habs pass and resign him.

At that price the habs wpuld be better off just being a broker on another deal.

Only trade that makes sense at this point. Take an expiring contract if necessary, retain 50%, get a 2nd/3rd that can upgrade to a 1st/2nd or down to a 3rd/4th depending on Monahan's ability to play.
I'd take a 3rd with no conditions at this point, but I'm not privy to the likelihood of him returning and when.
