Description
Edit: Reverted Reilly trade with Chicago and moved to buyout due to information provided in comments.

The Assumptions:
(1) Bergeron, Krejci, and Foligno return on cheap deals.
(2) Clifton prices himself out and signs elsewhere.
(3) Cannot afford to bring back Orlov, Bertuzzi, or Hathaway.
(4) Unable to move Hall or Coyle due their cap hits and NMCs.
(5) Buyout for Reilly.
(6) Swayman and Frederic offered contracts.
(7) Minimal salary cap increase.

The Ugly Reality:
Hall and Coyle will not be moved. Some combination of Forbort, Grzelcyk, and/or Debrusk are, unfortunately, the targets to address overages. They are...
(1) Making $3M or more
(2) Have limited or no trade protections
(3) Not signed recently (ie Zacha)
(4) Value of each is debatable but would result in positive asset return

(Don’t get hung up on the returns or trade partners. No idea what these players would be worth this off season. Thought was Grzelcyk would be able to move up and down Kings left side as needed and Debrusk in Edmonton if they were to move on from Yamamoto.)

The Optimistic Solution:
Options are (1) fill the gaps with very cheap UFAs or (2) roll the dice on the up and coming young players. In this scenario we go with option #2. If lucky one of Lysell or Lohrei are able to fill respective gap. If very lucky, however unlikely, both will. (In reality Lohrei is down in Providence and Zboril is on the left.)

Give Beecher some time on third line if camp goes well. If it doesn’t work out Frederic moves up and Coyle shifts to center. No real harm. Greer, Foligno, Lauko, McLaughlin, etc. are the 4th.

The Result:
IF the veterans do not lose a step and IF 1-2 of the young players can compete at the NHL level then you still have a competitive team. Less dominant but still playoff bound.

That is probably in the fair range for the Hawks to take a 3 million cap hit and 4 million in salary for a year. Problem is that the one Hawk's organizational postion of prospect depth is LHD, with a bunch vying for NHL playing time and not sure Reilly is a fit in that he takes a spot they could use to audition/develop/weed out those prospects. If forced to make a choice, I would probably do the trade from the Hawks perspective cause a potential 5th 2nd rounder is one more chip to push in if you need/want to jump up in the first round (either upgrade the Tampa pick or upgrading a 2nd back into the first).

Reilly buyout has a 333k cap hit next year. They are not using a 2nd to save 333k. The 2nd year it has 1.3 cap hit. By then the cap should have increased enough that it won’t be an issue. If it costs more than a 5th to move him they will just buy him out.

From the Hawks perspective that'll get it done. He's just going to stay in the AHL any way. They've got too many prospects that need development.

I don't think other BOS fans will agree this trade is fair value because his buyout is friendly, but this is what it would take to send Reilly to the Hawks considering Kyle Davidson's track record.

Matt Grzelcyk is no Devon Toews in the making.

I think I'd rather have Yamamoto + Bourgault than DeBrusk, which is basically what you're suggesting. Now that he's finally healthy he's producing up to expectations, with 11 points and +9 in the past 16 games.
