Description
OEL buyout to clear cap and improve D core

Trades:
1) Myers to Arizona for cap compliancy
2) Dermott anywhere, he has a tough couple years in van and the way I see it he is another 7/8 defensive depth piece the Canucks have plenty of
3) Trading away young players who could benefit from a change of scenery for Will Borgen, 26. Borgen has great defensive metrics and is a young physical d man who kills penalties in Seattle. Currently a bottom pairing d man but could blossom into a top 4 shutdown partner for Hughes.

Signings: Target mid to late 20s players to fit the rough age of the core
1) Ryan Graves, 27: replaces OEL as the Canucks #1 shut down d man and PK specialist. He is someone who actually suits that role. Similar contract to Tanev
2) JT Compher, 28: one of the most underrated players in the league, key piece in Colorados cup win. He plays 20 minutes a night, takes key draws (he’s right handed), kill’s penalty’s, and plays on the power play. He will centre the Canucks third shut down line with beauvilier and mikheyev
3) Ivan Barbashev, 27: linked to the Canucks as a potential free agent but he is not a centre. Hasn’t played centre in years his faceoff metrics are horrible. Perfect fit in the top 6 to add some grit. He has 60 point potential, is reliable defensively, physical, great PK guy, and produces on the power play

After watching Hirose for a few games I believe he can be a reliable bottom pairing d man next year. Tocchet already trust him over other d men like rathbone.

I believe Silovs can step up as the backup playing 15-20 games next year while Demko is back to form and takes a heavy load

Finally I think garland is starting to find his game under tocchet and becomes a 60 point player next year

Just a couple of questions. First, who would be dumb enough to send a 3rd for Dermott, let alone only his RFA rights? You said it yourself, that he is a 7/8 dman. Second question, why is Seattle adding a 2nd to Borgen? It’s not like Hoglander and Rathbone have the high of value right about now, as last I checked they were somewhat struggling at the NHL level. Seems to me like that pick should be heading the other way.

I gotta think Illinois native will have have better options.....Wings/Hawks maybe Ducks. Right now, the Canucks are not an attractive landing spot for UFAs who have a choice with their last contract..

Why do people persist in this demonstrably false contention that Arizona needs help reaching the cap floor next season? They have over $57 million in cap committed for next year and 9 slots on the roster open -- unless the floor goes over $70 million, they'll have no trouble reaching it.

Totally agree with you on the Seattle trade. The Kraken are trying to win anyway, so I think they'd rather just keep the surefire contributor in Borgen anyway instead of trading for a couple of question marks.

You’re probably right about Dermott, he’s been injured the last couple season so a 4th is probably more accurate. Could definitely see some teams taking a chance on him though, especially a team like Philly where he’ll get lots of deployment.

As for the Borgen trade, Borgen is still just a bottom pairing d man, nothing too special. Hoglander has some of the most pedigree out of his draft class at the NHL level. In any redraft he’s a top 20 pick. He had 27 points in 56 games and has show he can become a top 6 player. He’s in the AHL this year to dominate and develop further not because he can’t play in the NHL.

Rathbone does not belong in the AHL, he was the most productive AHL d man last year. In a more defensive system like Seattle his flaws would be covered by the team structure and his partner, the Canucks just don’t have that. Could be a bottom pair PP2 quarterback back next year.

Seattle is cap strapped and Hoglander and Rathbone could be cheap and effective assets next year. I’d say a second is reasonable
