Description
Caps rely on the pipeline (for the uninitiated, Gersich is an absolute stud, rising Junior at UND) to fill out wing spots and bottom 2 D pairs. I'm sure there will be a few trades here and there but the biggest move will be letting Carlson walk in 2018 offseason. He will be too expensive to keep and the Caps have enough RHD in the pipeline with Bowey/Hobbs showing legit potential. Otherwise Caps will likely re-sign key players (some of the salaries are generous, read: Wilson, Burkie) and flesh out the rest of the roster with Hershey guys who deserve NHL ice time. If guys like Gersich/Vrana/Johansen can turn into NHL contributors, this team can still contend. With OV/Kuz/Backstrom/Orlov/Holtby they will be solid and (big if) if the young guys step up they can still contend for a cup in a few years time. I'm sure GMBM will screw things up and sign a few old FAs who block these kids but in order to give OV another chance to win it all they should fully embrace the youth movement

Interesting. Even if all their prospects don't pan out, I can see where you've left enough salary cap space for some mid-tier free agents to keep mentoring those that do. If Carlsson is looking at 8M next summer, should the Caps trade him before losing him for nothing?

...I mean, of course they should at least wait until the trade deadline and try to estimate next year's salary cap before moving on from an elite defenseman, but if it looks like they can't afford him....
