This is a really hard argument to make, and I'm only really jumping on it because I want yourself and others to recognize that there can be more to the game of hockey than just direct scoring metrics.

You are 1000% correct to point out that Foegele scores at a higher per sixty than Laughton. If we tab over to the on-ice stats as opposed to the individual metrics, we can even see that Foegele's shot share clips about 6% better than Laughton's. No small matter. But usage of the two players points to a clearer picture.

Foegele gets much softer usage and sees a lot more offensive zone time than Laughton does. Laughton also finds about 2 more minutes per night of 5v5 icetime and on average SIX more minutes of icetime per game total. This will skew shot metrics. Laughton is also a center and a staple of the Flyers' PK. Foegele doesn't see more than garbage time on the PK as a complimentary winger to one of Edmonton's big pivots in those dying seconds of the penalty kill. Edmonton shelters Foegele when they can, likely in part due to his streakiness. Laughton gets the lunchpail minutes against other teams' top six.

Utility is always important to remember in these contexts. You weren't wrong, but weren't considering the entire picture.

Personally, if you want to point out a player on the Oilers' roster that would shun any Laughton acquisition, look no further than McLeod. Younger, cheaper, and is actively developing into that exact playertype. It was Laughton's fourth full season (d+8 season) when he broke out into being the two-way stalwart this community recognizes him as. McLeod's trajectory suggests he could be there as early as next season (d+6).
