Description
Can the trade include an extra 500-600k in retention of Pesce's contract? This would facilitate the signing of another depth player that allows the Oilers to ice a 22-man roster while still maintaining ~200k in cap flexibility for use around the deadline. Or potentially the full 2mil in retention? Would obviously cost more but that would allow Bouchard to be signed to the Dobson deal (4mil * 3) and maybe extend McLeod beyond McDavid's contract (2.25mil * 4 or 5, perhaps).

Only alternative would be further short-changing/shortening the McLeod or Bouchard deals- which are already straying into "too short/cheap" territory.

Additional Details:
How does a package like this stack up as a starting point? I've read a number of AGMs about this and the price seems to start with a 1st and one of the top prospects. While I'm sure CAR prefers getting current pieces, the 1st can be put to use in a subsequent trade (perhaps acquiring Karlsson?).

  1. Broberg, Philip
  2. Yamamoto, Kailer
  3. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
I think salary would need to go back in the deal and I think Yamo could be a solid 1-year replacement for Fast. As CAR has ample cap space, the retention and/or taking salary back doesn't seem implausible, either.

I think you’ll be outbid. This won’t be enough.

The Canes would retain half on Pesce if you want. Yamo doesn’t do anything for the Canes, he just becomes another undersized forward for the Canes, we have plenty. Plus he can’t stay healthy.

Broberg is ok, but he’s not even a top 2 defenseman prospect for the Canes and is aging out at almost 22 already.

Possible that they'll be outbid but I have a hard time imagining him garnering that much more. Could be wrong, though. Appreciate the feedback!

Okay, the retention is the preferred route, anyway, as Yamo can be bought out with minimal cost.

I disagree that Broberg is 'aging out' at age 22; Nikishin will also be 22 by season's start. I know circumstances are different but my point is that people are WAY too quick to dismiss a guy who just played his 21-year old season as an effective NHL regular. I think the combination of those two makes for a great and cost-effective development/ succession strategy behind Slavin. However, you're free to have your opinion.

That aside, assuming the package starts with Broberg and the 1st, what more would it take?

Yamamoto is a cap dump. Broberg is meh and the 1st is too far away. Carolina can retain, but you need to start with Bouchard. That's the only way this works. Otherwise, the Sabres can beat this offer 10000 times over with pieces like 13th overall, JJ Peterka etc that I've seen in deals so far.
