Description
The Flames are (likely) not looking to be top tier contenders next season, but they have a glut of young forwards coming up and some solid pieces all around. Players on expiring deals who look like they won't be returning should be shipped out for futures and/or players with longer term deals. Overall goal is to build a roster that can compete for the playoffs and have a good eye on the future.

TRADE BREAKDOWN:
1) Backlund to Bruins: a first for Backlund is fair; Poitras is one of the Bruins' few decent prospects, a worthwhile price to pay to dump a dead contract and retention on Backlund. Bruins get a solid C to spread ice time with Coyle

2) Hanifin/Toffoli for DeBrincat: Unfortunate situations for both teams. Calgary should be willing to give DeBrincat a long term deal to work with Hanifin and Kadri. Ottawa gets a slight downgrade on the wing and a solid addition to their already deep blue line. The Sens need to push for the playoffs this season.

3) Girard/1st for Lindholm/Kylington: Lindholm is a great addition to the Avs second line, especially with Landeskog out for the year and Nichuskin pending. Kylington, after a year off, should be back and a downgrade from Girard for much cheaper. Girard has a decent contract with some term. He'll look great next to Andersson and Weegar.

4) Tanev to Leafs: Controversial, but the buyout won't hurt the Flames. Leafs could use a d-man like Tanev and need to dump salary. A first and a good reclamation for the Flames is a worthwhile consideration.

5) Blackwell for Vladar: I can't see many contending teams looking at Vladar and his contract as a valuable asset. Blackwell is a decent depth player, and Vladar has shown streches of good play. If he can play decently for the Hawks, a trade with retention mid season could be worthwhile, while also helping them reach the cap floor.

That's not getting DeBrincat, Plus he already made it abundantly clear that he's not wasting his time in Canada.

Pass on DeBrincat. He won't sign in Calgary

That Colorado trade is brutal for the Flames

I like Backlund but you aren't getting that value for a 34 year old on an expiring deal
