Let's be real...this team has another year or two (three tops) to have a shot.
So, give us Karlsson. We'll take the whole salary, no retention. But the sharks have to take Petry and Granlund. That puts the salary total at a push, but they don't have to retain salary for 4 years (which is obviously a big deal). Then we throw in assets to give make it reasonable. Make Jeff Carter 'injured' and on LTIR. now we're cap compliant.

If there's no salary retention at all, this is probably about the futures you should expect going back. Because SJ will be clear of everything in two years and they're rebuilding during that time anyway. I also suspect ownership does not want dead cap money if at all possible so taking back shorter term bad contracts seems much more preferable to them.
