Description
I genuinely believe the penguins won't land Karlsson (which means they probably will because i'm a mush).

The ONLY way I see Pittsburgh landing Karlsson is if Carolina backs out of attempting to acquire him and Pittsburgh is the only team left and Karlsson's camp gets more pushy about wanting out of SJS. (Carolina can send back better pieces than Pittsburgh, they of course still have some question marks around Pesce and whether Tarasenko is signing or not, but their prospect pool is much deeper).

I don't believe Petry going back to SJS is possible as I don't think they're on his list. So the only possibility of him going to SJS would be if he waived (doubt that) or SJS have a trade in place that immediately sends Petry to a third team. So to me Granlund, and most likely one of Rutta or DeSmith (or both) need to go to SJS, or to another team. DeSmith has 1 year left and Rutta has two but both could easily be flipped at the deadline to a team with injuries or needing depth, they're both fine depth players but Pittsburgh needs to move all cap if they make this move.

I think the hold up is that the penguins are trying to find a place to move Petry which is difficult for two reasons. His NTC and his cap. I think Petry is still fine, he's not worth his cap hit obviously, but he isn't a liability by any means, he had a fine year last year, actually took a step forward from his last season in MTL. Chicago has 4 dman on the roster now and the prospect pool on D is all LD and believe their best D prospect is Korchinski who's a lefty, so Petry wouldn't necessarily take a spot from anyone. Only has 2 years left so you'd have to pay chicago regardless because it's a cap dump for pittsburgh but it's a player that fills out the roster in Chicago for now.

This is the only way i beleive Karlsson can wind up in Pittsburgh, I personally don't think it's going to happen, but again to me you have to move Petry to somewhere besides SJ and Granlund would be going to SJ.

I would guess Petry blocks this trade to CHI as well. I do agree with you. Last year July 7th and 8th had a ton of trades. 23 to be exact. So I suspect we're going to see a ton of activity here within week.

I'm going to disagree, but it's a guess for sure.

He has a 15 team no trade list, and it was wildly reported when getting traded to Pittsburgh that 1. he wanted out of canada and 2. he wanted to play for a team that's close to his family in Michigan.

7 canadian teams and the remaining 8 I would assume are all 3 California teams, Seattle, Arizona, Vegas (going based off distance and two being expansion teams) after that who knows who the other two are... it's tough to guess.

Chicago declines. 2nd isn't enough to take Petry.

Also, on the dates/trades. The Draft last year was july 7-8, free agency started on the 13th i believe.

it's a 2nd and a B prospect, and i'd disagree. He's going to play 2nd pair minutes most likely, and Chicago isn't a playoff team for the next 2 seasons. Chicago gets a prospect and pick for the cabinet and a player to fill the role for two years as chicago continues to build out it's team. Plus they could flip him at the TDL next season in his final year for additional assets.
