Pens get Karlsson. At this point, who else is going for him? And the Sharks aren't going to fully get what they want. In order to get him, Pens really need to clear Petry, Carter, and Granlund.
Petry likely won't wave for most teams...so how about a three team deal...Petry to Wings and play at home, Wings send Maata and ... to Blackhawks, and Hawks send Zaitsev to Pens.
Pens then package Zaitsev, Granlund, Carter (for LTIR), picks and a prospect or two for Karlsson and Duclair w/ no salary retention.
Probably have to do same cap manipulation somehow...
Detroit passes, Olli Maatta is a solid 2nd pairing defensive defensman that can chip in 20 points per season. He's cheaper and no way are we throwing a 3rd in for Petry. When Pittsburgh only gave up Matheson and a 4th round pick for an additional year. Pass we've no interest in Petry what so ever.
Hopefully Zaitsev is a mainstay in the press box this season but if not he's a good option for low minutes on the 3rd pairing. Trading him for a LD seems counter to their plan of rolling with Vlasic, Philips, Roos, and/or Kaiser on the left side. Plus they have Tinordi as a veteran presence. On top of that Maatta has one gear and it's low.
I think you have some good ideas here. Like the idea of Duclair. I don't think Carter waived for SJ though. Would probably have to deal Rutta in this scenario.
