Joseph and a second to retain $2M is quite an overpay.
Joseph would be a better fit for the Hawks if he were a RD, not LD. LD is the
one area the Hawks have an abundance of talent they've been slowly marinating, some of whom will now matriculate to the NHL. I expect they'll have at least two, possibly three rookies at LD this season. That's the first struggle that comes up for me in considering this deal.
Secondly, this deal consumes the second of the Hawks three retention spots available to an NHL team; a long one - four years. This could seriously impact the wonderful machine the Hawks seem to be employing to get good future picks : Pay up to get good vets on short-term deals, then flip them at the TDL for high picks by retaining some cap. IMO, the Hawks simply arent gonna take up a retention spot for four years and imperil that lovely high draft pick machine, absent a substantial overpay.
Bottom line: I think this is a fair offer, and if Joseph were RD, I think the Hawks would seriously consider it - even if it is for four-year retention. But he's not; so, I think (and I could be wrong) the Hawks decline here.
Cheers
