Why would Chicago be adding? At absolute minimum they get 7 years of Bedard, whereas McDavid is UFA in 3. Bedard as a trade asset is orders of magnitude more valuable than McDavid.

This is the worst hypothetical......but the one big question and reason why Edmonton shouldn't do this is that MacJesus has proven to be reliable health-wise during his career. That is the only unknown left for Bedard. I don't think there is anyone who would say that he is in danger of being a bust, but can his body hold up in the big leagues? Probably, but thats enough of a question mark to not do this.

Zero chance Edmonton does this. They aren't rebuilding.

This proposal makes no sense for either team.

The Oilers are in “win now” mode, they are not trading away the best player in the world. Bedard is a phenomenal prospect but it will take time for him to reach his ceiling and let’s face it, it’s very unlikely he reaches McDavid’s level. An additional 1st round pick probably doesn’t make up for taking on the risk of trading away McDavivd.

The Hawks are in the early stages of a rebuild and just acquired their new franchise player. While the Hawks have stockpiled an impressive group of prospects, it will take time for the Korchinski’s, Nazar’s, Moore’s etc. to arrive and mature into impactful NHLers. In the meantime McDavid will be playing with a roster lacking sufficient talent to take advantage of his incredible skill set. In two years McDavid will be looking to leave for an opportunity to win somewhere else.
