Description
I don’t understand the Kakko hate or reason for trading him. Yea, he hasn’t lived up to 2nd overall hype, but he’s still a good NHLer at age 22. His strong suits are puck possession/protection, wall play and defense. His cap hit is $2.1m and coming off a slow start/serious injury this year. He’s oddly become the scapegoat when Kreider/Mika have sucked at 5v5, so obviously Kakko gets demoted to 3rd line

Last year Kakko had 15 goals 32 points at 5v5
More points than:
Bergeron, JT Miller, Tarasenko, Zucc, Barzal, DeBrincat, Reinhart, Batherson, Kreider

More goals than:
Suzuki, Bergeron, forsberg, pinto, Terry, hertl, Laine, pavelski

1. Some people are impatient
2. Some people think the window is closing
3. Some people base everything on G & A

Fact is, this is the prelude to the Chris Drury window. His job isn’t in jeopardy. The kids are developing and getting playoff experience. More kids are being drafted that will be a big part of the window. He’s not giving up important pieces for an extra round of playoffs today

And he never should. Hughes was an absolute clear 1OA in everyone’s eyes and had that potential to be generational.

I don't think it's hate.

Most fans expect a 2nd overall pick to be a franchise player.

Sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

Brayden Point was drafted in the 3rd round.

Tampa would be lying if they said they predicted he'd become a franchise 1C.

Kucherov was taken in the 2nd round and he might win another Hart trophy this season.

Rangers are a big market and big expectations come with that.

Laffy is improving each season.

But he's also taken his slings and arrows.

Detroit drafted Zadina #6 overall.

Guess who was #7?

Quinn Hughes.

Kakko may benefit from a change of scenery.

But he may continue his development and become a valuable player for the Rangers.

At the very least he's good defensively and he's effective using his size in the corners.

The Rangers need that.

I don't blame the Rangers for pickling Kakko 2nd overall like the Monday morning quarterbacks do.

At the time it was the consensus pick.

It's just draft position & expectations in New York. He needs to go somewhere else to get that off his back. He's a solid player and will be appreciated as such with a fresh start.
