Why would the wings do this when they are already that tight against the salary cap?

A) Leaves us with 4 goalies
B) would rather not be a team that just eats ****ty contracts.

DET has lots of cap space and should weaponize it a little to get some value out of having cap space. You send Campbell to the AHL (will go unclaimed) so you get about $1mil back. Then the assets give you some extra trade chips. Reimer is gone after the year. Lyon and Husso both only have 1 year left and that's the NHL tandem. Campbell could be a decent goalie again even if he never lives up to the contract.

Or, Edmonton don't trade him, keep the two firsts, and buy him out in the summer.

When last I looked, they were doing pretty nicely as is -- oddsmakers have them favorites to get to the conference finals. I don't think that Campbell is the burden outsiders think that he is.

I think you're right and the only way they have to move on from Campbell this trade deadline is if they have something else lined up involving money in and the only way to make it work is dropping Campbell's contract. Like if they also trading Broberg for Tanev + but Calgary wouldn't take extra money back or something like that.
