Pittsburgh doesn't have the assets for Mitch Marner, That offer would be blown away by a country mile. You actually have to add worthwhile pieces and this isn't it.
I'd honestly be surprised if that's not good enough. I think it's too high for someone with one year left on his contract, actually.
Given that the roster in this ACGM made no significant improvements to the bottom 6 and actively made the defense worse, that 1st rounder is going to be a lottery pick, and no trade protection was specified. An early 1st and a middling 2nd aren't bad magic beans for a team with the Leaf's prospect pool.
Nor is Brayden Yager, who's been one of the key pieces of Moose Jaw's run to the Memorial Cup. He's projected to be a top 6 NHL forward and Dubas thinks he's got a shot an the NHL as soon as this fall.
And then there's Marcus Pettersson, who I think would instantly be a top 2 defenseman in Toronto, and probably their best one defensively. I actively consider him untradable unless the Pens tear it down, and they wouldn't do that if they were gunning for Marner.
Not a lot of trades recently have had that much value on one side. We certainly didn't give up that much for Karlsson, and I'd argue the Meier and Lindholm trades didn't even have that kind of value, as the former didn't have a significant roster player going to SJS and neither having a 1st rounder earlier than 26OA. The closest comparison I can think of is Eichel, who was younger and not a rental at the time of the trade.
