Description
Potential moves that would keep the Knights in the playoff race while also getting younger and adding picks.
Trades
1.
VGK
  1. Brown, J.T.
  2. Condra, Erik
  3. Thomas, Ben
  4. 2018 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Condra is just a capdump. Brown can be extended or flipped and even if he walks, it's not a complete disaster.
TBL
  1. Neal, James
Additional Details:
Adding Neal would make the Bolts a complete overkill team for the playoffs.
2.
VGK
  1. 2018 4th round pick (NYI)
  2. 2018 5th round pick (NYI)
NYI
  1. Engelland, Deryk
Additional Details:
Bandaid in case CDH is out for season.
3.
VGK
  1. Polák, Roman
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (SJS)
  3. 2018 4th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Leafs are pressed againts the cap already, so the price for a 4/5-slot guy like Merrill rises up to two picks.
TOR
  1. Merrill, Jon
Additional Details:
Vegas has too many dmen and Merrill, even if Left-handed, would be a fit for the Leafs, in addition to helping Vegas clear the defensive logjam.
4.
VGK
    Future considerations
    5.
    VGK
    1. Gunnarsson, Carl
    2. Jaskin, Dmitrij
    3. 2018 3rd round pick (STL)
    4. 2019 2nd round pick (STL)
    Additional Details:
Two picks, a young-ish depth forward and a veteran dman who can be flipped or kept if needed would be a good return for Perron. Gunnarson's contract also helps the Knights in a way, as they need contracts to reach the floor if they go even younger next year.

Not real sure how getting rid of Perron and Neal keeps you in the playoff race. Vegas has a surplus of picks already and they will probably make the playoffs, so I would assume they choose to keep their top guys and try and resign them. More likely to trade one of their depth defensemen IMO.

No, it doesn't help, but they need to deal them. They are gonna be way past their prime when Vegas is contending. It makes no sense for them to re-sign those guys. Bring in younger guys, who, yes, are downgrades, but who are also not in the end of their primes. Also, an expansion team never has a "surplus" of picks. Drafting is the only way to succesfully build a new franchise.

Well the roster you have above would be destroyed in a playoff series. And sure obviously Vegas wants to have as many picks as possible but this expansion is not like past expansions where the players they currently have are actually good and they definitely have a lot more picks than most teams do in the next two drafts. I do not disagree that they should trade away these guys I am just saying if they truly want to be relevant in playoffs they cant afford to.

Well they don't have to be relevant in the playoffs, they need to make them and win 1 game. That's enough at this point. Hell, CBJ won their first playoff game in their 14th season. If Vegas can do that in their first year, that's lightyears better than anybody expected.

Honestly i see Vegas biting the bullet this year. Not selling anyone expect for maybe 1 or 2 lesser guys. They have a seriously good team right now and playing capable playoff hockey. I think they need to quantify how big the impact of having an amazing team do as good as they are doing, is to the fan base and building hockey in the desert.

Logic says use this chance to cash in on players you got for free to get young assets back but my gut feeling is saying "Can you imagine how big it would be for the fan base to have this team go potentially deep in the playoffs?

Yeah its all fun and games adding top picks and prospects every year but that doesn't always mean success down the road. Look at Arizona. I think if you have a chance to truly compete for the cup (not just squeezing into the playoffs and hoping to get lucky) you have to go for it a little.
