It's funny, out of all those bad trades, the VAN is the worst. And this is coming from a Caps fan.

Habs are glad to send Max to D.C., but would probably want Johansen and a first-rounder. That's effectively Pacioretty for two late first rounders. That's a solid deal for both teams.

Can't speak to the rest of the craziness there.

You're overpaying for Laich, giving him a raise over the deal he had with LA earlier this year.

I like that defensive corps, but, honestly, most of the moves are unnecessary. Carlson is outscoring Karlsson this year, and Niskannen is a steady #1 defenseman.

If New Jersey wants Orpik and has cap space for him, Edie Lack is a fine return, and using the resulting cap space and flexibility at goalie to trade Grubauer for Green is pretty sweet.

But I think your Ottawa trade is more of a face lift than either team wants while both are in contention, and it has the Caps giving up more youth than they'd like to, while Ottawa would hate to retain salary on Phaneuf, and would hate to trade Karlsson or Stone.

Why is Washington trading for Demko just to trade Demko for Skjei? Why not just trade Beagle for Skjei, while we're being unrealistic enough to think the Rangers would trade him for so little? This reads like a rough draft.

Edit for simplicity and realism.

More importantly, I looked up Jiri Hudler to see if he was really still unsigned, this late in the season, after scoring thirty goals in 14-15.

He is. And one possible reason why is pretty funny, in a Dave Chapelle/R. Kelly sort of way: https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/airline-nhls-jiri-hudler-demanded-cocaine-and-tried-to-pee-on-foot-cart-on-flight/

Some team is going to sign him by the deadline, and, one way or another, they'll get a good show.

He doesn't exactly sound like Barry Trotz' type of guy, in this story, but I have a feeling Ovechkin would find him hilarious.

Just don't put him on a line with Mike Ribeiro.

Okay. Sorry. Just checked the standings again, and Ottawa has nothing to lose. This is a superstar-studded lineup, practically an all star team.

While I don't believe it could happen, and I dislike giving up Niskannen, Djoos, Bowey, and Johansson, I admit this lineup doubles the Caps' chances at winning a Cup this year.

Since there's a chance John Tavares is available in free agency this year, and a slight chance he decides to join whoever wins the Cup, if you could do half of this, then, of course, go for it.

But I'd rather have Grubauer and Bowey than Lack and Green. Grubauer's numbers the last couple years have been, in limited action, pretty close to Holtby's. He's going to be a starting goalie for years, and Lack isn't. Bowey is already as solid defensively as Green, and neither would see an ofensive zone start behind Karlsson and Carlson.

I think for a third pair behind two superstar puck movers, you look for tougness and defense, so your ideal third pairing is Orpik and Niskannen. Can't get better than them for defensive situations. But that explodes the salary cap, so if you can really get salary retained on Phaneuf, maybe him and Schenn could work in a pinch? Or Phaneuf and Wideman?
