That's a pretty steep price for taking on Weber's contract. I wouldn't do that if I were Edmonton.

No way can Edmonton afford to take on Weber at $7 million for the next 7 years or so, Once McDavid's $12.5 million kicks in this summer Chia will probably have to dump Nugent-Hopkins just to afford resigning the RFA's like Nurse and others.

They'll probably have to dump Nugent-Hopkins either way. The difference between Weber with retained salary and Sekera's is only $1.5M, while the difference in quality is much bigger. Wether the upgrade in quality and skill is worth the extra cap space and the price I suggested is up for debate (including Mantha might be too much). Weber also fills a need: Edmonton is thin on the right side of defense and deep on the left.

Weber's contract is very tradeable later on in the deal. His actual salary goes down, while his cap hit is high AND he has no clauses regarding trades/movement. A low cap team looking for a cheap salary to add a high cap hit would gladly take on Webers contract similar to what ARZ did with Pronger's deal, and what TOR did with Horton.

All of what I stated, that's assuming Weber's play declines and isn't worth the deal. That's a whole other conversation.
