Description
I did this from the STL side and put all of the under contract players into the lineup so that any holes created by this deal can be seen right away.

STL lacking a 1st at the 2018 draft hurts them at the deadline.
Barbeshev is potentially a 2C put is unproven and might only be a 3C. Kaspick and Musil are decent young centre prospects but likely don't have a place due 2 the bigger names STL has in the pipeline.

The original trade had one of Musil and Kaspick, a 2019 1st instead of 2020, a 2018 2nd and the 2019 was conditional. I figure dropping the 2nd this year and putting off the 1st gets us both Prospects.

While the 2018 draft is deep, the STL pick would have been 55+, getting 3 young Centres into the MTL system instead of 2 and a maybe C, depending on who's still on the table, seems like a bit safer option.

On the STL side they are not giving up their much loved big 4 prospects, they have a pick in the first 2 rounds every year, unless they make other trades with them but this deal doesn't take them. STL also doesn't go 2 years without a first.

While a guy like Kane might be cheaper, you have to spend that or sign him, for more than 4.5/year most likely, or you are in the same place rental wise next year, and paying that price again, possible on Pacioretty as a rental.
Trades
MTL
  1. Barbashev, Ivan
  2. Gunnarsson, Carl
  3. Kaspick, Tanner
  4. Musil, Adam
  5. 2019 2nd round pick (STL)
  6. 2020 1st round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Montreal takes a cap dump at the deadline that doesn't extend passes this season, possibly Gunnarsson so he is in the trade to show that.

Little overpaid IMO...
Put Schenn 1C and Steen 3LW... you can resign Statsny for 3y-6M$ until your younger C get ready for more action (Thompson & Thomas)
Or stick like that at C: Schenn, Berglund, Thompson, Thomas no shame

I don't want to do resigning on this one but I will move around the others. This is more figure if the trade creates holes and are they unfixable. But yeah Statsny would be an option for them.

He isn't signed past the current season but yeah he is another good option. I'm a Habs fan and don't want to step on STL fans toes by saying what the value of their FA's are at this point in the season.
