Trades
1.
VGK
  1. Carlson, John
  2. Orpik, Brooks
  3. 2018 4th round pick (WSH)
  4. 2018 7th round pick (WSH)

WSH
  1. Garrison, Jason
  2. Hyka, Tomas
  3. Miller, Colin
  4. 2018 1st round pick (VGK)
  5. 2019 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:

2.
VGK
  1. Hobbs, Connor
  2. Holtby, Braden
Additional Details:
Holtby has eight more playoff wins than Fleury since 2011, and three more seasons with at least three playoff wins. He is 2nd all time in playoff save percentage. Fleury is 49th. To win the Cup, Vegas likely has to beat Pittsburgh, who kept the guy in 6th place.
WSH
  1. Subban, Malcolm
  2. Suzuki, Nick
  3. Theodore, Shea
  4. 2018 4th round pick (PIT)
  5. 2019 2nd round pick (CBJ)
  6. 2020 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Vegas has more prospects at center than Washington, but Washington has more prospects at defense, so while Vegas gives up Suzuki to help compensate for Holtby's immense value as a recent Vezina trophy winner (best goalie in the NHL), they get back Hobbs who might already fit in at right D, where Vegas is thin. Subban becomes Washington's backup. No team carries four goalies.

  4. 2018 5th round pick (VGK)
  5. 2019 2nd round pick (NYI)
  6. 2019 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Ottawa could use picks, prospects, and a reduction of 5.7 million in payroll this year.

So this is my response to some criticisms here: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/116199&post_id=372942

I tried to make these trades more fair, all around.

I think the Caps then trade Backstrom for Galchenyuk and a 2nd, and start next year with Suzuki at 3C, in sheltered minutes, and consider themselves rebuilt to compete next year, without missing the playoffs once.
