That's a good offer for OEL but i don't think Arizona takes it.

Also, that doesn't get you Allen.

I understand the logic: Tavares has seen the Isles miss the playoffs even with him there, so they need to upgrade the defense and goaltending.

Putting Leddy and Ekman-Larsson together on the left side of the same team might reduce each of their workload enough that OEL isn't -28 and Leddy isn't -40. But what if it doesn't? They each got about a third of their 40ish points this year on the power play, and the Islanders will only have so many power plays to go around. You're overpaying for a one year rental on a left defenseman who's got the same strengths and weaknesses as the one you already have, who isn't getting the job done.

Jake Allen won thirty games once, but not this year, and he's 27, the age most athletes hit their peak. https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/a/allenja01.html What if it's all down hill from here.

So, while I agree that upgrading the defense and goaltending could help convince Tavares that he shouldn't just join one of the teams that's already in the playoffs without him.... I'm not entirely convinced you have done so. Probably. Slightly. Maybe?

If I were Tavares, I'd still pick Toronto, Vegas, or maybe Colorado. In this scenario he has a chance to make a plan to stay in the playoffs for the next seven years, or to hit them once or twice before OEL walks and Allen declines. Those other teams have just as much young talent, and are in the dance, or closer to it, without Tavares, than the Islanders are WITH Tavares. So unless Tavares has no actual value, adding him to them lands them in the playoffs, and they stay there a while.

I am not sure there is a deal the Islanders could make at this point (barring a crazy Erik Karlsson trade) that would give the Isles anything close to a guarantee at re-signing Tavares. None of your moves, above, make the Islanders a legitimate playoff contender and that's the problem. If anything, the Isles are sacrificing a bunch of their future for a question mark in net and a rental of OEL for a single season with no guarantee there either that OEL would resign long-term with them. My honest opinion is that Tavares will hold off until he speaks to the rest of the league during that UFA interview period and will make a decision to sign with either the Stars, Devils, Nashville or Colorado. If Isles fans are disappointed, they really only have their team's management group, and specifically Garth Snow, to blame here. But I 100% believe Tavares will NOT be an Isle at the start of next season.

And i bet you said the same thing for Stammer :S i believe there are still 50% chances he stays. JT seems like a guy who has very high loyalty towards the organisation and fans just like stammer so he only need to see the team has a plan to be a contender and he'll stay. With Barzal, Pulock, Beauvillier, Ho-sang the future looks birght there.

Pick #40 overall, a 5th the following year, and a backup G for Allen? Blues could probably take that offer if they were comfortable with Carter Hutton signing in STL as the 1A. Hutton/Greiss might not be a bad option. I'd rather trade Jake for straight picks and let Husso back up Hutton until mgmt feels he's ready to be a starter. Could sign someone like Bernier/Cam Ward/Chad Johnson for 1 yr as an insurance option behind Hutton/Husso...if they get lost to waivers no loss in assets. I'm just not that comfortable with Jake Allen at the wheel for 3 more years, and the Isles probably shouldn't be either.
