I don’t think the offer for Puljujarvi makes much sense for the Oilers at this time. They’ve already made their plans for a back-up goaltender, so I doubt they have interest in Mason. They have an over-abundance of left-handed defensemen, including prospects; Stanley is a monster, but I don’t think they’d see a need for him. They need pure shooters, preferably on the right side of both 1st and 2nd lines. None of Dano, Tanev, or Perreault could fill that roll. The picks don’t do much to address the pressure that team is under to win now. Oiler fans best hope Jesse Puljujarvi breaks out this next season. He was drafted because he is a shooter, and he plays the right side.
So Mason's on the books for one more year. I included him in the trade because he's a huge upgrade on Montoya and viable starter if you're willing to pay a little less than an extra million. If not, you could amend that part of the trade. It's not very important to the Jets one way or the other. We're set with Hellebuyck, and Mason's gone before Laine and Connor need to be resigned.
I think I speak for fans from other teams everywhere when I say that as much as Chiarelli's attitude to spending his assets has been kind of morbidly funny. (I lived in Edmonton for school, so I got a front row seat to watch the Hall trade, and the Lucic and Russell contracts.) Chiarelli has really made it hard for you guys to do mutually beneficial business in the trade market.
The best offer my Jets would be able to make in this case is throwing in Appleton. He's the AHL rookie of the year the past year at RW and C and is an absolute production monster for a guy that came out of nowhere. He's very big, very fast, and scores a lot. Otherwise, it's looking like this deal is wishful thinking, which is a shame since both the floor and ceiling Puljujarvi would be perfect fits in Winnipeg, and Perrault, Stanley, and the 25th would be more than fair return for most teams in the NHL.
