Pesce blocks a fair amount of shots, but he doesn't score much, and his career total of 144 hits, over three full seasons, is 44 more than Wilson had in the playoffs this year. So....

Okay... so i agree that if they can't afford Carlson, someone like Pesce who can play a lot of solid defense is fine, and they can move Bowey up to.... oh I see your salary cap problem. You gave kempny 2M, and Patrick Maroon 3M to be less tough than Wilson, six years older, and slightly better next year, but declining instead of improving.

Why not take that 5M, plus the cap space you have, and just sign John Carlson for 8 years at 7.7M. Then sign Wilson for less than Pesce, and trade Grubauer for a first or two 2nds. Now you've got a better team, and a better prospect pool..

Pesce is a good top 4 defenceman on a cheap contract for 6 years. The term on the contract makes him valuable. I like Wilson, but I also like Maroon. I'm from Edmonton and I think he's highly underrated. He can hit, he can fight, he's gotten faster over the past 2 years. I think he could replace Wilson

John Carlson is better defensively than Pesce because he gets a better plus/minus over more minutes with ever so slightly tougher zone starts. Carlson also led all defensemen in points this season, both regular season and postseason.

Wilson't hit total of a hundred these playoffs was the 8th most, out of the 20 years anyone's been counting. Half the guys he's behind are retired, and two others are Brooks Orpik.

Maroon has 27 career playoff points; 7 more than Wilson. Wilson has 235 playoff hits; 107 more than Maroon. Yes, Wilson has played 15 more playoff games. Or, if we go by performance through age 23, when Maroon hadn't seen any playoff action yet.... I think CCG and I agree on this one:

I could see giving up Grubauer (who is worth about a mid-first round pick) and a 3rd to get Pesce or a similar 20 minute defenseman if Carlson walks. That's totally reasonable.

Wilson, Grubauer and a 1st for a guy who plays 20 minutes a night, gets 2 goals and 20 points a year, and blocks 1.2 shots a game, to end up -8? Way too steep. For all those assets, Carolina could part with Hanifin.

I mean, I signed Maroon on a build two days ago, so I'm not arguing that his mix of toughness and scoring would be a great fit with what the Caps are doing, but he's the kind of guy who compliments Ovechkin, Wilson, and Smith-Pelly. He's not going to come in and replace them.
