Description
Buffalo may not actually think about moving the first overall but if they did. . .give them something to think about.
Lou calls on his old pals in a couple of deals, obviously knowing well the players coming back and their fit, along with aligning JT with a couple of his old pals, to insure he resigns.
Leafs make these moves insuring loads of cap room going forward.

Gofnut's right that talent quantity can't match talent quality. While BUF might take that deal (Gardiner + Nylander is really attractive), the CAR deal is bizarre and the Isles don't part with JHS for these returns.
Beyond that:
1. Dahlin's an LD. He cannot solve the RD issue. If your solution is to play a guy that doesn't play his off side on his off side, just run Gardiner-Reilly.
2. I like Dermott, he's a really good, young 2LD with loads of potential. He is not a 1LD. Leave Rielly there.
3. O'Reilly is absurdly good, managing a positive Corsi on the worst Corsi team in the NHL in heavy defensive usage. But him and Kadri serve the same role, and Kadri's way cheaper and very effective. Why do you want O'Reilly?
4. By JT I assume you mean John Tavares. If so, a) Why isn't he here? and b) Why would a team with Matthews/O'Reilly/Kadri want him?
Ultimately, you failed to address the Leafs single hole, lost some very key pieces (Nylander, Gardiner) and made one of your best contracts redundant. This is not how to GM.

First of all one at a time, on the way back from cottage in the car and Aa couple of D's moved around on me. Of course Dahlin lines up on the left and Reilly moves over to the right. , (actually prefers it and plays better there).
You could put Hainsey up with him but IMO, Dermott is ready for the extra workload.
IMO Kadri serves best as a 3rd center, no where near as good as O'Reilly, most of his offense coming off the PP, and struggles in his own end. O'Reilly on a better team should eclipse 70 points while more than giving you a better 2 way game. Not to mention his crucial face off performance, something we likely will lose if Bozak leaves. Tavares has apparently decided to at least negotiate with NYI and I would have him ina second if that falls through but this then becomes a solid plan B, solidifying through the middle and maintaining cap responsibility. (Multiple free agent elite centers available in 19/20 should Leafs want to revisit).
The Islander trades could have been combined, but the overall is: they want to move Ho Sang, gather some depth, align Tavares pals, and pick up a reliable back up goalie at a cheap cost. As for Carolina, McKeown has not and likely will not make the Hurricanes D this season, and the also pick up bottom 6th depth, as well as a needed goal. Leafs get depth at RD, where he even might end up behind Holl on the depth chart.

1. Morgan Rielly is not a RD. I am not aware of a large enough sample of Rielly as RD that suggests playing him on his off side is a good idea.
2. Hainsey isn't a top pair guy. That doesn't solve the problem. Dermott's good, but high PDO has masked some of his faults. He's ready for a bigger role, but not as a 1LD.
3. Nazem Kadri has been very effective as a 2C for the Leafs netting 30 goals. O'Reilly is an upgrade over Kadri, but Kadri's stil very effective, and way cheaper, freeing up cap space for other areas. He's solid in his own end in heavy defensive usage as Babcock's go-to shutdown centre, and has been for the past 2 seasons. FO% isn't everything, especially given how easy it is for a team to sign a face off specialist (like Plekanec) for far less than $7.5 million.
4. You have not answered why the Leafs would want a free agent centre. This roster has Matthews, ROR, and Kadri. You don't need more centres.
5. The Isles DESPERATELY need an upgrade at starter. IMO JHS will get moved for the rights to either Grubauer or Lehner. They want a backup, but they aren't gonna spend a good prospect on it.
6. The CAR trade's a nothingburger that doesn't deal with the Leafs issues. Not a problem, but it doesn't redeem the team either.
The team is still adding in places they don't need to add and not adding where they need to add. That's bad GMing.
