Why would Chicago even think a second about doing that?

Because he's retiring but still have a contract counting for 5,275 millions $ on the payroll of Hawks until 2020-2021...no?

#1 - Hossa will go on LITR and therefore the $5.275M gets full cap relief.
#2 - His cap hit is $5.275M (which again goes on LITR so doesn't matter) but his actual salary pay is only $1M.

Because of this, teams that have trouble reaching the cap floor, will use his cap hit of $5.275M instead of putting him on LITR with only a cost of $1M. Make sense? If nobody wants it, Hawks just throw him on LITR day 1 and only take a cap hit of roughly $150K or 1 day of his cap.

So again, why would the hawks give up a #8 pick, doesn't make sense...no?

Zero chance Hawks move #8 pick to shed Hossa's contract. They will move Anisimov long before attaching a premium asset to Hossa IF they even get to a point where the cap space is needed this Summer. Schmaltz emergence in the middle with Kane makes Anisimov a luxury for the Hawks that is easily moved (you may not love the return you would get....but certainly moveable).

You don't need to package an asset with Hossa's contract. Most people don't understand the latest rules on LITR, but there is a good explanation of it.
