I don’t believe toronto is going to trade Gardiner. The only time he might be traded is on the deadline.

Fair opinion, I just believe that Dermott is ready to step into the top 4 and take on minutes as well as PP time. Toronto has a load of LD ready to move into the 5/6 spot and by moving Jake we might be able to resolve our needs at center.

I think the real key for Toronto to succeed is to trade for prospects who are ready to make the jump. Next year they are gonna have cap issues. They had their chance to make their run while they had the prospects but they didn't get there. It's time to realize they need to shift directions. Mathews is probably an 11-12 million cap hit alone, Marner is going to be a high cap hit. There goes all that cap space and look at all the pieces missing next year.
It's like half a team with not much cap savings as most of them are already on low paying deals. You will be right into cap hell. If they are to avoid being the oilers, they need to find young cheap good help to off set those huge cap hits until they become more reasonable hits against the cap in 4 or 5 years. That means if they are going to make trades they need to not bring in older vets who will become free agents they can't resign and use those assets to try to bring in quality prospects. They aren't going to win a cup next year. They should be looking at 2-3 years to be in the race. They are gonna end up stuck being a mediocre team long term if they screw up the cap. They should learn from how the oilers messed their situation up. Prepare in advance.

You have to joking. So the Leafs only chance at a Cup was last year when Matthews and Marner were second year players.? Other teams win Cups with expensive aging veterans. Let's see Ovi, Backstrom, Carlsson, Orpik, .
The Leafs won't be winning the next year either, with about seven rookies or near rookies in the lineup.
Unfortunately the ill informed use the term cap hell without realizing what it really means. Cap hell is when a team has too bad contracts...players that aren't playing to their contracts. Or they have retained contracts which are a waste of money or they have buyouts which is also a waste of money. Now if a team has too many good players and can't sign them all because of the cap. it isn't cap hell. They just might have to trade a player, a good player and get close to his trade value (and not the cap) in return.
The Oilers problem isn't so much the McDavid and Draisaitl contracts, it's the Lucic, Sekera, Russell contracts. As Branch Rickey said, (even before any sort of cap)" It isn't the high cost of the stars that hinders a team budge, it's the hight cost of mediocrity." (I'm paraphrasing)
