1) McKenna isn't an NHL caliber goalie...even as a backup. He's had multiple chances to be an NHL backup, and has floundered all of them. Guy is a great AHL goalie, and that's it. He won't be on the NHL roster come September.

2) Tavares isn't signing for $9M. Even with the tax advantage they have over other teams, the Stars are still going to have to pay $10.5M+ to land Tavares. Just because the Stars have that tax advantage doesn't mean they are going to low ball one of the elite centers in the game.

3) By signing Pateryn, you are essentially giving away Heatherington. Because of his waiver eligibility, Heatherington would be available to the other 30 teams if the Stars tried sending him down to the AHL. No chance he doesn't get picked up by someone else. Heatherington has to be on the NHL roster come opening night, or we'll very likely lose him. No point in signing Pateryn and losing one of our young defensemen.

4) You're missing Val Nichushkin. That's another $2.95M in salary cap that you have unaccounted for here.

5) And Dallas isn't going to give up a former 1st round pick (who is showing great development so far) just to dump Hanzal's contract. Even if they sign Tavares, don't expect Hanzal to get traded. The top trade candidate would be Spezza. Obviously he has a NMC, so he'd have to okay any trade, but a retained-contract Spezza is going to draw more attention from teams than an injury-prone Hanzal.
