Your Morrissey evaluation is accurate in terms of advanced stats value, but nowhere close in terms of practical NHL evaluations. Dumba just signed a 6mill deal after a 50 point season. Morrissey has barely hit half of that in his best season to date. Morrissey counting stats wise is almost identical to Roman Josi, who signed 7 years at 4mill, and metrics wise is fairly similar to Ekholm who is even more underrated, at 3.75mill. All of those players' value comes mainly in the form of possession, and elevating their linemates.
Everything Morrissey does well is criminally underrated by the NHL and our GM of the year candidate isn't doing a GM of the year job if he doesn't take advantage of that. 4-5mill is where he'll probably end, maybe even 4-4.5 if he doesn't bridge, and if he does, it will be somewhere in the 3-3.5 range.
As for the trade, we don't need an EK. Trouba is fine for this year, and next year we can trade him for his future replacement plus something. Byfuglien is fine as our premier guy at close to 4mill cheaper than what EK will make in an extension, and we have potential options.
The Myers-Morrissey pairing puts up similar enough numbers to the Trouba-Morrissey pairing that you really have to wonder who's driving the force on the Jets' top pairing. As I said, JoMo elevates every pairing he plays with. It's uncanny, and very useful since we don't need a Trouba level RHD to be a dominant team.
Tyler Myers has endured probably the unluckiest season and most incredible comeback I can remember from anyone to date. You have that kind of family trouble combined with a season ending injury, and then follow it up by playing all 82 games, having your 2nd all time high in points, and filling in seamlessly as into the top pairing man for close 27 of those games. I don't mean to wish the jets to take advantage of his adversity, but the way the jets respected his family's privacy and allowed him to step out of team affairs to handle his business, lets me be optimistic he it will be a smooth free agency discussion if the jets have room to bring him back.
