Melnyk wants Ryan out, so you can trade them a worse player as a cap dump as long as their cap is lower than Ryan's.
The idea: You need wingers. Badly. Take a bet that Ryan can revive his career on McDavid's wing. Ryan still has his skill, he can skate, his contract is shorter, and you can buyout his contract easier (and cheaper) if it doesn't work out.
If you want, add your personal Karlsson trade to this.
Upside:
Ryan is a better player
Faster
Contract is shorter
Is showing life (look at his last playoff series, give him a line and he could rebound big time).
Can be bought out
Cheap to aquire
Downside:
Larger cap hit
Injury prone
Predictions:
Scenario where it works out:
Ryan recovers to a 40-50 point guy on McDavids wing, spends minimal time on IR. Still overpaid but you turned one of the leagues worst contracts into a workable player, and started to address one of the teams large problems.
Scenario where it does not work out:
Ryan stays bad, stays injured all the time, basically nothing changes. Gets bought out at year end. This is where the magic is:
Ryan's contract if bought out vs Lucic's Contract if bought out:
Ryan:
Original Cap hit - New Cap hit
19-20: 7.25 - 3.583,333
20-21: 7.25 - 3.583,333
21-22: 7.25 - 3.583,333
22-23: 0 - 1.833,333
23-24: 0 - 1.833,333
24-25: 0 - 1.833,333
Total cost for team in cap: 16.25 mil
Total cost for team in salary: 11mil
Lucic:
Original Cap hit - New Cap hit
19-20: 6 - 3.625
20-21: 6 - 5.625
21-22: 6 - 4.125
22-23: 6 - 5.625
23-24: 0 - 0.625
24-25: 0 - 0.625
25-26: 0 - 0.625
26-27: 0 - 0.625
Total cost for team in cap: 21.5 mil
Total cost for team in salary: 5 mil
So what does this all mean? For Ottawa, they can buy him out or play him or whatever, and as they are not really affected by the cap, they will be fine. The benefit to them is a cheaper contract.
For Edmonton if the worst comes to worst and Ryan does not work out, you can by him out for cheaper than you can get Lucic for, at the cost of a slightly higher penalty down the road than Lucic. This allows Edmonton to actually build a team around McDavid, even if Ryan flops.
Edit: you can also get Nurse on a long term deal, which is a plus.
I don't think Ottawa will get anything done until minutes before the trade deadline, because Melnyk will intervene and ruin anything promising for the future.
It all ends with Melnyk's bankers repossessing the team, and Justin Trudeau buying the Senators with a plan to build a new arena in downtown Ottawa as a matter of national interest
...and it would fail to Lucic not waiving his NMC for OTT
That is the only hiccup. I think its about an even shot if they allow Dorion / stars on the sens to convince him to come. "Help repair the room, be a big leader, rebound next year" etc.
I like it. I'd imagine playing with McDavid would bring Ryan back to just about/under the production Ottawa was hoping for when they signed him. Hell even if he played with Drai, we would probably see a great change.

I think putting him with Drai would be beneficial for both players. Drai is an extremely underrated playmaker & is a fantastic passer. Imagine what he could do with a shooter like Ryan
