Minny's old, and with Staal's deal expiring, I think this might be their last year to go for it all. If we're out of contention, embrace the tank and hope that we can snag a future 1C with one of our 1sts.

I like Staal in Dallas a lot if we trade him. Behind Seguin they don't have much depth down the middle. I was also a Dellandrea fan at the draft so I'd be very happy if we got him in our system. I've made a multitude of Spurgeon to Toronto trades in the past and I'll echo my statement that I think he's a great fit there (I would do cartwheels in the streets if we got Nylander from Toronto as unrealistic as that is).

You lose me with all of your other trades besides the Olofsson to Nashville, though. Belpedio should spend almost the entire year in Iowa so losing Spurgeon and Prosser really hurts not only us, but probably Belpedio's development. Same goes for Kunin, he should spend almost the entire year in Iowa to develop confidence and he definitely should not be playing on the 4th line if he gets called up. Matty Hendricks was brought in as a character guy and frankly I don't see us moving any of the guys we just signed this offseason (I realize these would be made at the deadline but that might look bad as an organization to incoming free agents that "hey we just signed you but.... we traded you"). Stalock has been a serviceable enough backup and he's another character guy.

Your bigger trades look pretty good (if we're out of the playoff picture since this is the premise of your post) but I don't see us moving the depth players you've traded outside of Olofsson.

That's why it says "at the deadline". At the very end of the year, why not ship out our depth guys and let the young guys have a 20-game cup of coffee?

Yeah I edited my post a little bit to tailor to the premise of your post.

I just feel it's better to let the kids play in the AHL instead of establishing a losing culture for them in the NHL, even if we aren't making the playoffs. Builds their confidence and allows them to be dominant before they bring their skill up to the big leagues. Basically I just don't want us to rush any of our prospects. Look at what Iowa did to Alex Tuch, the kid's a stud now. Being patient with our prospects pays off.
