Description
Formenton gets his 9 games before going back to London.

Pageau returning is interesting because he could basically slot in anywhere. He could slot in at 2nd, 3rd or even 4th Centre, OR he could find a spot as 1st or 3rd RW which is where he ends up long term once Chlapik White and Brown mature.

With all these different options I decided to highlight four interesting possibilities.

The 3C Option:
7-95-9
18-71-61
15-44-89
56-36-17

The most obvious, and most likely option is that The Honey Badger returns to his natural habitat as this teams 3rd line shutdown centre. Both Smith and Boedker have had solid showings in the top 6 early on, but Smith loses the 2C spot to the More offensively talented Tierney and Boedker is the better option for a shutdown type role than Ryan. Smith and Pageau have proved time and time again that they go together like peanut butter and jelly, and you add another strong skating defensive forward, and you've got a pretty standard checking 3rd line.

The 1RW Option:
7-95-44
18-71-61
89-15-9
56-36-17

A potentially boom or bust option, putting JGP with Brady and Dutch give you a very tenacious line that plays a fast paced game. We've seen glimpses of it before (chicken parm night), but Pageau has always had a bunch of skill just bubbling under the surface, but he's rarely had the opportunity to strut his stuff. This line would give him the chance to show what he can really do offensively.

The 3RW Option:
7-95-9
18-15-61
89-71-44
56-36-17

My personal favorite option, this is the option you go with if Smith has shown he isn't going to give up that 2C spot. Tierney gets the official nod as the 3C, but both he and Pageau split the face-off duties, each taking draws on their strong side. This option give you the most balance in the Top 9, and probably gives you the strongest third line possible.

The 4C Option:
7-95-9
18-15-61
89-71-36
56-44-10

Probably the least likely option, this again assumes that Smith clutches on to the 2C spot for his life. Though he would be the 4th Centre, in this scenario the 4th line likely sees similar time to the 3rd, acting as an alternate option as a shutdown line. Having a second option to throw out against top competition gives you better defensive coverage against teams like Toronto with multiple "1st Lines." Pyatt draws in over McCormick here because 56-44-10 was our 3rd line for parts of last season and we know it works fairly well.

Those are my favorite options, but if you'd try something different please let me know.

Good analysis. Despite this team not playing defense on a nightly basis, I've been rather entertained by them of late. I'd like to see White get more ice-time then Smitty. I know Whitey hasn't show much but what's he to do when he's only playing 6 minutes a game. If that's the case, send him down to Belly to get more ice time with and play Pyatt and Carey on 4th line roles with Pääjärvi and have that be the PK / Filler line. Both Carey and Pyatt can play the centre or wing and Pääjärvi has shown he can kill penalties and be a serviceable depth forward.

The third line of Dzingel-Pageau-Boedker is just pure speed. Would love to see that in the future for sure.

With how good Smith has been, it's really hard to justify giving White that ice time. I think hes been quietly pretty solid, and he could handle centring the Stone line, I just don't think he's earned it.
