This assumption that Panarin resigns with the Leafs makes the trade look better than it really is.
If Panarin is so intent to sign with the Leafs, I wouldn't trade for him, sign him as UFA, and the trade Nylander for good young assets.

Was kind of assuming Panarin didn't want to sign with us originally...

My thought was to have Panarin for the playoff run, have that extra year in the contract negotiations to bargain with and have a season to convince him to stay in Toronto.

The trade definitely has a lot of risk to it, was kind of thinking of the Kawhi situation

Leafs probably don't have the cap to sign Panarin if money is an issue. "Hoping to see an UFA" is after giving a lot in a trade is bad business. Just look Tavares, and he had lots of ties to Long Island, he had other reasons to leave the Islanders. The fact that Panarin didn't even want to negotiate with his current team, CBJ, almost shows his heart in elsewhere or certainly wants to option to look at 31 NHL offers next summer.

Can I say isn't the point of "trading Nylander" is so that we DON'T have to pay 8 mill?? @palhal
