Description
This is assuming a 80M cap next year which most think it will be higher but I will be conservative about it.

-Sign Nylander asap. Worry about next year, next year. Go all in on playoff run. (18-19)

- In next year offseason, Trade Brown (Luxury 4th liner for a team with cap issues) and Kapanen (Won't be able to afford him in next contract).

- Use current available Dmen that you have to make it till TDL 19-20. (TO Should still be a playoff team by then even with shotty defense) Then use picks and prospects acquired from Brown and Kapanen (Plus extra if needed) to get best available pending UFA dmen. Go all in for playoffs with that.

- Following year Marleau comes off the books in addition to a more then likely higher cap, Toronto resigns everyone and uses some remaining cap to sign a top 4 dman. (Unless Liljegren/Sandin is ready for prime time)

Is this scenario ideal? No of course not. But Leafs keep all 4 big name star players at only the expense of depth players. (Brown, Gardiner, Kapanen)

Without any luck at all, the D looks terrible and they have to rely on their offense for them to win games every night in 19-20 untill the TDL when they can aqcuire some pending UFA's to help them. But with a little luck, guys who come in on cheap contracts over perform a little and the team barely notices the loss of those depth players. Reality is probably somewhere in between. If that's the case, it won't be as nearly as bad as some think.

I am not sure that Kapanen needs to be traded, he had a hot start but he's been rather pedestrian for the past few games. Matthews makes him great but on his own he's a good winger with upside. I bet they can get him to sign a 1 year deal this off season. I agree go big this year and figure out next summer when that comes. I am not overly worried about the defence. I think next year you may have to be really young but sometimes that works out. Remember that time TO was supposed to be really bad but then signed Joseph and also two rookie defenceman played great? Those guys were Danny Markov and Thomas Kaberle. Maybe Sandin and Liljegren really take strides and can be a decent bottom pair playing sheltered minutes. Their skating abilities alone will let them get out of a lot of problems.

Makes sense, and even if they do trade Nylander, his value should be higher at the 2019 draft (assuming he is signed relatively soon and remains healthy) as the Leafs will be in a great position for a deep playoff run and Nylander will help with that. Having Nylander playing increases his value more than having him sitting. And you are right too, if they do sign him they should try to keep him.

That's the strategy Tampa's going with... "And what's good for the goose, is good for the gander!" I also like this strategy if no team out there gives Toronto a deal to their liking for Nylander.

This is a stupid idea (no offense intended) overpaying a player in cap era hockey is not a plan for success. You should also consider what this does to our other rfa contracts. So you pay nylander 8m on 60 points and marner puts up 85... cap inflation plus the added performance you’re looking at what 10.5??? And if marner is making 10.5m bobby gives the address of where to pull the brinks truck up to pay Matthews. Which leafs to the utter stupid loss of kappy... I would be happier with nylander playing in the khl and the leafs being able to ice a more competitive team for the next 8 years than blow it all up to take some haphazard run at the cup this year with a bunch of 21 year old stars.

      Offense taken!! rock on

Nylander and Marner have very similar point productions thus far. Marner hasn't scored 85 points yet. Wait for him to do it first before crowning it. But If he does, 20 extra pts does not = an extra 2M. Is Rantenan getting 10.5 in his next contract? I don't think so. Seguin only got 9.5 or something like that and he's a 40 goal scorer....

As for keeping Nylander, this is an option only. I personally would sign him for the sole purpose to move him afterwards. Toronto has enough offense. They need quality dmen. That would be my preference. If a Nylander for Pesce+ deal is available, Im taking it hands down but then again Im assuming that's an offer. If the only offers available are futures and over the hill players, I'd rather keep Nylander and make cuts elsewhere.

Paying a premium is inevitable in todays NHL. Where people have been getting it wrong has been they've been doing it for A) players past performances (Toews, Price, etc) or B) paying it on non star players that you shouldn't pay premiums too. (David Clarkson, Marc Staal, etc)
