Description
Would Toronto only deal Nylander if it involves a top 4 right handed defenseman? Is that where the conversation begins? Do they want any prospects or draft picks?

Probably not, but do you see them asking for high picks/prospects?

no. thye need someone to help them now and in the future. so they're gonna aim for a younger player.

There aren't many 6.5m player with 5 years of term available....but the would be the price for Nylander and his exchange on the trade. Yea RHD would be nice, but not a deal breaker. Still, the team that trades for Nylander needs to sign him, and would any team want to pay him much more than Leafs are offering?

IF Toronto HAS to move him, I think the best option is to move him for a young right-handed defenseman along with a solid middle 6 forward. If they don't re-sign Gardiner next year (which would be hard to do with all of their RFA's to sign), their top 4 D will be Rielly, Zaitsev, Dermott, and probably Ozhiganov. That's not a very good top 4... Even with Gardiner, their defense is definitely the weak point, particularly on the right side. Nylander could be used as a trade chip to fill those holes and the hope would be that the players they get back are young so Toronto gets as many playing years out of them as they can. I think Toronto is better off keeping Nylander, but if they are forced to trade him I think their biggest needs are on the blue line.

Now Toronto could just as easily move him for a forward or two. @SammyT_51 made a great trade a while back for Philly that dealt Frost and Simmonds with a conditional 3rd (if Simmonds re-signed, the pick would go back to Philly). I'm not sure that Toronto really needs to add more scoring, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
