You're not going to get the Kings to retain that much salary. They're already in a cap crunch and Doughty's extension kicks in next year.

I like the idea on paper, but within three years, it's a loss on the ice.

The Kings might retain $1M or so of Kovalchuk's contract, and agree to take back a contract or two to make the numbers work, but they're not going to retain that much salary.

If retaining half the contract is what it takes to get the deal done, then he's not gonna get traded to Washington.

Okay. Kovalchuk has three more even strength points than Burakovsky, so far this year. 8 to 5. Washington has no cap space. Kovalchuk's contact is not a good fit, and their power play is fine as is.
