Description
To fit the cap, Leafs prefer to keep Nylander long term so they trade Kadri without taking money in return. Matthews signs for lesser money short term, in order to become a UFA as soon as possible. Matthews does get an offer sheet for greater money, but prefers the Leafs short term and UFA freedom sooner

    Additional Details:
Trading Kadri . Leafs need to send trade him for picks or cheap ELCs. Could be any team. Kadri at 4.6m for three more years should be relatively easy trade, though Leafs likely wouldn't get true hockey value in return.

4 years for Matthews? Wouldn't he become a UFA after that contract?

Yes. My thinking is that Matthews will get an offer sheet for greater money...maybe even 15m from Arizona. Matthews doesn't sign the offer sheet, but uses that for his negotiations with the Leafs. He'll stay a Leaf for four years and enjoy four more Cup runs. He then has choice of being playing for a team he likes in after four years. Maybe the Leafs, Rangers or a California team.
Leafs would prefer Matthews for eight years, but it just might not be possible. Maybe the Leafs have to settle for a four years since Matthews would have great negotiation power.

I still think he would want to play here. I think 6+ years would be a must or he is sprinting out of here for Arizona in 2023

Matthews has LA or NY written all over him. There is talk that ESPN wants back into hockey... I don't like what you are sayin' but I can see your point.

DAL would take that. If you want to have an ELC, I think DAL could offer you a 2019 1st, 2020 3rd and probably G Jake Oettinger. We have two good goalie prospects, so we could probably give one of them away.
