Even Eugene Melnyk couldn't turn this deal down. Ottawa takes it laughing. Bobby Ryan isn't worth the pick by itself, let alone the rest

Well then the caps are very happy to have a player who will actually produce on their third line and for a very reasonable cap hit. 3.6 m for a well above average 3rd line player who can be a game breaker in some respects. Dont spend your time worrying about what the Caps gave up, they are more than happy with what they got back (and have him for a few more years at that).

I'd say good luck getting Melnyk to retain that much on Ryan though.. he doesn't like to pay his own players. Won't like paying a guy half his salary to play against him.

that's why the Caps aren't just giving up one thing. The package is supposed to compensate for the lofty retained salary.

it's still way too much for Ryan. you're better off getting something else that can produce more at a way cheaper cost.
