Ottawa would never take that. A franchise defenseman, second line center and a prospect who's ceiling is in the top-6 fwd area in exchange for a 1st line center(which they already have in Duchene), 2nd pairing dman in Carlson and 1st rnd pick which is gonna be in the 20s? Uhh, no?

I agree with you completely, KAL. . . . but if that wasn't a shot across the bow this week in Ottawa to a team and an owner that traditionally don't spend, then I don't know what is! If I'm Ottawa, I at least start feeling out what's out there! I cannot see, Eugene spending the type of coin it's going to take to get Karlsson resigned.

Not at all the price of one of the top 3 players in the league. Melnyk has always paid up when needed, and will do the same for Karlsson.

Contrary to the donuts above me, Ottawa should take that and run. They can't afford Karlsson down the road, Brassard is a quarter of the player Backstrom is and Carlson, contingent on an extension in the 6.5 range (or less), would be great value as a replacement.
Ottawa's window is closing and it was never open to begin with.

Besides, it's Ottawa. No one cares about Ottawa.

If I were Senators GM, I'd never accept this trade. Karlsson is the best d-man of the league and one of the best player of the entire NHL. Even being a d-man, his offensive production is better than almost all of the league forwards. So, he's a unique player and he's irreplaceable.

Why would SJS give up Dillon for Orpik??? Orpik has worse contract and is much older, just these two facts show that you have to give up more than 6th round.

Regardless of whether or not this trade is fair, how much would it suck to watch Backstrom lead the Senators past the Caps in the playoffs?

Wtf lol. Someone doesn't like Karlsson, Ottawa or both squinty smile why would Ottawa ever do this. Karlsson is the best offensive d-man in the league.
