Instant scoring help, but at a cost

Created by: flamesfan419
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 17, 2017
Published: Dec. 17, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
DET has 4 young pieces who will be RFAs after this season and will want big money so it may be possible to get a really good player back from them.
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Tatar, Tomas
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (OTT)
2.
CGY
  1. Kane, Evander
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
This move happens now and allows 2 months before the trade deadline to work out details of a new contract for Kane to stay in Calgary. IF by the deadline no deal can be made he becomes a really good piece to offload as a rental to a cup contender and recoup picks in return.
The 2019 2nd round pick in the deal becomes a 2019 3rd round pick if Kane does resign and remain with the Flames.
3.
CGY
  1. 2018 5th round pick (CAR)
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
If the VGK are going to make the playoffs in their first year, and it certainly looks like they will, adding Stajan as a rental on an expiring contract might have some appeal as Stajan adds veteran experience and playoff experience who can still be a good checking forward.
Wotherspoon has NHL experience (limited) but was considered highly to make the Flames this year until Kulak stepped up and took his spot.

The only RFA's Detroit has that might cost a lot are AA, Larkin and Mantha i kind of like the deal but i see Holland dealing Nyquist before Tatar.

Nothing wrong with Dougie. It's a "need for need" deal. BUF needs a big RD and CGY needs a gritty scoring winger.
Salaries are pretty much a wash and both clubs get what they need.

There is no way I'd trade Dougie for Kane unless it's a sign and trade. You can't take the chance of trading for kane and then hoping he re signs because if he doesn't your organization just got screwed hard. Not viable.

I understand what you're saying and I hope you saw my reasoning in the trade description. IF EK doesn't resign with the Flames before the trade deadline, then we offload him and get decent picks in return. Pretty sure we could get back at least a couple 2nd rounders if not even a 1st & 2nd from someone out there who wants a top scoring forward to push them over the top in their playoff run.

Yup i got that, but even if you can salvage draft picks if kane doesn't resign, that doesn't make up for the loss of dougie and makes our team worse for the next few years. So no still wouldn't do it.

Aren't the Flames trying to make the playoffs this year? I certainly wouldn't mind getting Dougie back for Kane (unless he's really proving to not be worth that contract), but doesn't it make more sense from Calgary's perspective to do a more standard picks/prospects trade for Evander and not give up important roster players for a rental?
