No Habs rebuild can happen unless these two guys are traded. In order to facilitate a rebuild both guys have some "what if" scenarios happen to ease a potential trade.

What if:

Either

(8 years left down to 4 more years with Weber)
- You knew Weber would retire in the 22-23 season and his recapture penalty would only effect Nashville. So once he retires, you would have NO cap hit penalty like NJ has with Kovalchuk. He's completely off your books.

or

(8 years left down to 3 more years with Weber)
- You knew that at the next NHL lockout in 21-22 (Lets assume its a half season like last time), owner will agree to buyout Weber's contract with a compliance buyout which means his cap hit won't effect the salary cap. So basically team has to pay a small portion of actual money to him but there would be no cap hit penalty against your team

What would his trade value then be right now?

What if:

Either

- Carey Price asks for trade and due to his big contract agrees to go to any team, waiving his NMC. MTL agrees to retain 38% of his cap hit for the remainder of his contract, meaning his cap hit will stay 6.5M for the rest of his 8 year contract extension as well as his NMC is now voided.

or

- Carey Price asks for trade and due to his big contract agrees to go to any team, waiving his NMC. MTL agrees to take back every single one of that other teams bad contracts as well as his NMC is now voided.

What would his value be?

That second Weber option is a huge what if because it relies on the NHL giving teams another amnesty period for the compliance buyout.

Dang it Banks, the whole point was to see what other teams would pay if these criterion were met. Other fans won't come see this in the Habs thread.....

I guess the fantasy thread would be more appropriate?

Moved it to the Trades section, does that suit your intention?

Step 1: These are MB contracts and we know he is stubborn. A rebuild should also signal a failure and the end of his tenure.

Weber: 2 prospects and a roster player, with cap concessions. (ie Strome, Joseph, Duclair, Bolland from Arizona). Preferable to picks as we want a fresh crop of players ASAP.

Price: Similar, but with the only cap concession being the trading team's current goaltender. (ie Dal Colle, Toews, Pulock, Greiss from NYI).

You can swap the prospects around and it might be worth it to take a 1st in place of a prospect from a bottom 5 team, but that limits your trading partners and extends your timeline, so you're better off targeting current prospects that you are well scouted on.

What happened: Subban was up for negotiation and both sides played hardball. The result was arbitration, which Bergevin purportedly avoided with an 11th hour deal, on the (speculated) command of owner Geoff Molson.
Further speculation: Did MB harbor resentment or see this as an embarrassment perpetrated by Subban?

What if: Subban had accepted a "hometown discount" or been more amenable to Bergevin's offer?

Subban makes Bergevin look good by taking a lower value. This makes him one of MB's "boys" and a "team player" with "character".
As a reward, MB makes Subban team captain (yes, I know it was a vote, but with MB on Subban's side ... who knows?).
The Weber trade never happens.

Do you mean the world isn't under the control of Soviet dictators now? Russian, parts of Ukraine, United States.
