What's the debate? How many LHD do the Leafs need? OEL, Chychrun, Reilly, Gardiner, Borgman, Dermot. And OEL has only 1.5m years left on his contract. Matthews does have 5.5 years of Leafs control. And if Domi didn't have a well known father, he would just be another young guy....with potential.
Now I admit, the Coyotes might be in position to offer the largest offer sheet ever in the summer of 2019, but until then.

It really isn't a debate anymore. Having one superstar is worth more than multiple great players. But as palhal mentioned, whats the point? They already have good LHD and Domi is good but losing Matthews down the middle is irreplaceable.

Any player can be traded. Look at Gretzky in the old days, in the salary era, Phaneuf and CLARKSON were traded. Anything is possible.

Toronto wouldn't do it.

But it would cost ekman larsson, KELLER and multiple 1st round picks.

Arizona's best hope is an offer sheet, which would be like 7 years 16 million (or max % under the CBA)

The Gretzky trade included $$$$ 10m to thieving, incompetent businessman Pocklington desperately needed. Money cannot be exchanged in a trade anymore. Funny how the LA owner (forget his name), paid Pocklington 10m, more than doubled Gretzky's salary to 2m with money he didn't have either. Both owners spend time in prison.,

Phaneuf was traded for by the Leafs for long term cap relief. Ottawa made the trade apparently for short term benefit on the ice (they did reach the Eastern final last year). Since Phaneuf's contract was front loaded paid by the Leafs, there wasn't really a great exchange or actual money in the trade.

And that Clarkson/Horton trade. We might never see such a trade. Leafs agreed to pay out of pocket 27.5m to (5.25 for 5 years) for the uninsured Horton LTIR contract, just to get out of Clarkson 5.25m, 5 year cap hit. Columbus figured it was worth getting something (Clarkson's playing value) than paying Horton out of pocket. Clarkson solved Columbus's and now Vegas problem by going on LTIR, probably forever. Contract is insured and cap relief by LTIR. If the owners of the Leafs had Clarkson's LTIR fate, maybe they wouldn't have made the deal.

Obviously that deal doesn't get done today but there was significant chatter before the draft about what package the Coyotes would send to Toronto to move up to #1. OEL, 7th overall pick and another prospect (Dvorak/Domi/Strome) was the general base.

I'm not saying any of those trades would happen today I'm just saying, any player can be traded any contract can be traded.

Phaneufs contract is gone and we only have Greening that's in the minors, Pickard who btw is making his Leafs debut tonight and the pick, which I forgot who they got with it. That's a win.

The Clarkson for Horton trade was genius.

As for Gretzky trade it was the old days and there was special circumstances but the fact remains that arguably the best player ever was traded.

DJSums. Actually Greening's NHL contract was up last summer. He signed new minor league contract with the Marlies. Apparently he was good soldier for Marlies, despite been demoted to the minors in the previous year. A work out warrior. You always need a few good vets on your minor league club and Greening fit the bill. He might have coaching aspirations.
Pickard was acquired for a 6th rounder and Lindberg. Lindberg was a former second rounder drafted by Ottawa and sent to the Leafs in the Phanuef. deal So the what the Leafs have from Phanuef deal now...is Pickard and still have 750,000 of Cowan's buyout which ends this April, plus the main thing....cap space.

Gretzky after what he did for LA was actually traded for St Louis. And Gretzky wanted to play for the Leafs in his final years when he was a UFA. There was a deal in place, but because ownership was in flux due to Ballard's death, the owners/ececutors of the estate didn't want to pony up the 2m a year for Wayne, hence his move to NYR.
