NYR - 2017-18 1.0 Trade Dead line

Created by: Skeating622
Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade deadline move(s)
The CBA can be opted out of in 2019, IF that happens in the negotiations, compliance buyouts will be on the table. So 2 years of Phaneuf over Staal with the potential Compliance buyout OR even buying Phaneuf out after next year (if thE cba is not opted out of) before McDonagh becomes a UFA is an option i'd take . Teams gets a bit tougher.
Same option with OTT to get that compliance buyout with Staal. He may also be better suited in OTT's defensive system.

Winnipeg is rumored to be looking to add for a push.
Getting some grit & younger with B. Lemieux and a big D prospect ,(Stanley) although he looks to be a project. 2-3 years away from the NHL.) WIN are deep at D and get a prospect with upside back as well. The Jets farm system seems to be in better shape developing younger talent. Zborovskiy should get a better look in that system.

Also adding Vanek for a push this year can replace some of the goals (or non goals) that you lose with Nash.

Yeah & getting the players to waive the appropriate NMC's would be an issue.
.
Kreider status uncertain so LTIR is an option.

Trading Holden for picks just doesn't seem to make sense if this team is looking to make a run.
His return would be minimal better suited to have the veteran depth on the back end.

I think the Ottawa trade is very interesting and think they may just pull the trigger on that one as long as salary is retained. the inclusion of the 2nd rounder seals it!

No way do i see Marc Staal waiving for Ottawa, You deal for both Phaneuf and Vanek yet deal Rick Nash how does this make any sense. If you're dealing for Phaneuf and Vanek then your thinking is the Rangers make the playoffs so Nash isn't going to be traded then.

Yeah, i put in the notes the NMC could make it all moot.
I think Nash needs to go IF they want make a playoff run. I don't think he's worth resigning so trade him to a team also looking to add. (i read on TSN that Win is looking to make a move for a playoff run) Get something for the future & free up cap room to add something for the short term in (Vanek) & i'd rather be stuck with Phaneuf in the short term(over Staal) & see if the CBA situation in 2019 add a compliance buyout or, buy him out after the 18/19 season. Nash is an interesting piece where he's not relied on to be THE guy. I love his 200 foot game & his compete, but he can't carry a team like the Rangers.

Ronning ? A 7th round pick that may very well be non tendered in the off season, so he’d be lost for nothing for a package for a player like Vanek that can score goals NOW?
Ronning may be bottom 6 forward at some point but he needs work & it could be years. This is a scenario adding a piece now without adding big dollars/ years.

he's not breaking Ray Ferarro's WHL receod, 108 goals in a season. I like the kid (liked his father as a player too) but he hasn't signed an ELC & he'd be a FA if he doesn't sign by 6/1.
With the # of Rangers contracts capped at 50, they might not sign him. I think hes got a better shot of breaking into the NHL with Vancouver or any team that inst in a win now mode & can patiently develop talent.
His ties to the city & team seem like an obvious fit too.
Lots of 20 year age players put up big #'s in the WHL, see Gropp & Tambelleni as Ranger examples & look up Tyler Wong for a recent reference, to see how big #'s in your last year of WHL JR's can translate to the Pro Game.

The Rangers are not looking to rebuild currently & moving on from prospects that they may deem as not in the NYR future (Graves, Tambellini, Ronning) is part of the game.
