Wrong math for Stone. It would cost you four 1st round picks.

"AAV – dividing the total compensation offered by the lesser of the length of the contract or by 5. Ie. a seven-year, $49 million deal has an AAV of $9.8 million ($49 divide by 5) but a salary cap hit of $7 million … A five-year, $35 million deal would have a $7 million AAV and cap hit … A big difference in draft pick compensation."

Nice big overpayment for Stone. That isn't the compensation Stone, you'll find why their so few RFA signings when you realize the true compensation.

What do you mean? Thats a huge underpayment for Stone. Definitely not a overpayment. Hes on pace to hit over 80 points season. Which is really good especially considering hes playing for Ottawa.

Oh, I like Stone, and you're right he's on pace for 80 point season. But he's been a more tradional 60 point guy. So what are really paying for? And the compensation is 4 first rounders. (Read the entire rules on compensation rules, especially for 6 and 7 year deals). Leafs have lots of wingers, especially right wingers, Nylander, Marner, Brown, Kapanen, Soshinkov, Bracco. They are spending money and picks elsewhere.
Fact in the Leafs (and any team), can spend 7.8 or other players and keep their 4 first rounders, and have better value than putting it in one guy...Stone.

If Ottawa is in a true rebuild, Stone would be very valuable in a trade for the Sens. The acquiring team would like cost certainty, meaning what his next contract is going to cost. And from Ottawa's view, instead of picks,,,some AHLers who are gonna to be NHLer or already drafted juniors who look like they are going to be NHLer soon.
Too bad the Sens didn't think of this rebuild before they wasted such good assets on Duchene. I suppose reaching the semi finals , gave a false illusion on how good the team really was. But all teams do it. Leafs fans suffered through the Burke/Nonis era trading (poorly) for a Cup run, signing overpaid UFAs cause they thought the Leafs were Cup contenders.
