Random Jersey Speculation (read description)

Created by: Matthews34
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 15, 2018
Published: Jan. 15, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Today upon Dermott being recalled the Leafs forced him to change his number from #3 to #23.. What could this mean?

To add feul to the fire, Johnson wore #3 before playing in Columbus, and OEL wore #3 for Sweden internationally.

Or is it just to get away from Phaneuf's number??

What do you think? Speculate away!

Do the Leafs have a number policy? (callups can't use certain numbers)
Maybe they only keep a few jerseys, already numbered, in stock for emergency callup purposes and just add their name?
I'd be more intrigued if he was wearing #29 or #16. wink

Lou just might be more of a traditionalist. Defencemen wore single digit numbers. I should know, didn't Dermot wear # 3 as a Marlie? OK, I'll add to the conspiracy theory......Eddie Shack # 23 is returning to the Leafs.

Dermott has already played this year as #3. He isn't really an emergency call up. They haven't played a game since he was send down.

But Dermott used to wear #3. They moved him to #23 today.

Maybe it's because of his second call-up. 2. 3. BTW, by the title I was thinking the Leafs were working out a deal with NJ.

If Dermott has already worn number 3 with no issue, that looks like smoke. Fire incoming?
Could it have been his choice?

If the Leafs have picked up a #3 somewhere, my first guess would be Johnson.

Dermott said today he has no idea why they forced him to switch. They just gave him this one.

Thanks Matthews. Now I"m really confused. If Phanuef returns as a Leaf, the suicide hotline in Toronto will be busy.

They didn't play a game in between his demotion and recall.. I just see no point in the change.

And I'm sorry about the jersey thing.. That never crossed my mind it could be interpretted that way. Lol.

Sorry, apparently I tend to troll or hijack threads. Actually, I like to try and inject humor as I enjoy play-on of words and names. I hope that is okay by all and understood. No idea why something like this happened besides a new veteran being brought in. From a Hawks fan who knew about longtime suffering, the best of luck and fortunes in Toronto's quest for the Cup!!

Thank you smile

I'm just hopeful something happens that gets Polak out of the lineup.. Lol. That's all I ask.

Are you sure that they didn't change his number because he was playing poor enough to be sent down with one number, then played good in the AHL with the different number so they want to keep the momentum going and give him a psychological edge? If it was making room for Johnson, that's not a high end move imo so it could be feasible. OEL would cost a lot as well so be prepared to lose a lot of quality assets for a guy like that. This was interesting.

He was not sent down because of his play at all though. Him and Gauthier were sent down ONLY because the Leafs were on bye. So they sent them to the Marlies instead of doing nothing up here. Dermott has been great in the 2 games he's played with the big club.

Just thought this move was strange. Especially including that Dermott was confused as to why he had to change.
