Big offseason

Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2018
Published: Jan. 16, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumes Islanders accept that JT won't re-sign and move after the draft to get something ... anything.

Assumes Habs tank in latter half of the year and get lucky in the lottery. That said, Habs might be able to grab a rookie scoring winger if they don't land at #1.

Assumes Dallas opts to move the struggling Spezza. Move frees up $4M in 2019 to re-sign Pacioretty. Poehling will have had a year in the minors with some cups of coffee in the show in a pre-rookie year.

Lehner could cost only a second and a low level prospect. That’s an easy deal to make.

Lehner has started 33 games so far for the Sabres and he's an RFA. Why would the Sabres risk letting him leave. Jonas Johansson isn't ready yet and Linus Ullmark has played about 20 games in the NHL. Unless they have a trade for a goalie planned, it would be nuts to let him go at all, let alone a low-level prospect.

The consensus from beat writers is that he wants to win. Are the Habs in a better position to win now and in the future than the Isles are? Absolutely not.

If they land Dahlin, trade for a decent #2 in Spezza, yea you could argue MTL is better than NYI. Lets all agree on one thing. NYI are not winning a cup with Greiss or Halak in net. Frankly even Lehner should they trade for him isn't that much of an upgrade.

MTL is having one of their worst years of the past 20 years, and they are only 8 points behind NYI as is. Can you imagine if just Price alone would of started the season like he normally has. The Habs would be in a playoff spot and Isles probably wouldn't right now.

I think JT will resign with the Isles but if he came to MTL, (and all the other things fell into place like Dahlin and Spezza for example) anyone can see the Habs would of fixed the only two major holes they have on the team currently and could easily compete with any team in the league.

If Bailey is a 90 point guy playing next to Tavares, what do you reckon Pacioretty would be?
